Obituary
Joseph B. Vickery, 76, of Fort Wayne, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday May 24, 2024, after an extended illness. Joe was born February 29, 1948, in Anderson, the son of (the late) Arthur J. and Rosemary (Gooding) Vickery. After high school, Joe proudly served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He spent the next 30 years in various capacities in the restaurant business, retiring in 2010 from Brothers Express.
Joe is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy Vickery, and their children; Teri (Brett) Grubbs of Floresville TX, Bryan (Dawn Cox) Vickery of Sechrist Lake in Warsaw, Matt (Amy) Halim-Likes of Sacramento CA, Ryan (Katrina Wearly) Vickery of Fort Wayne, Staci (Jerome) Wimes of Fort Wayne and Sara Street of Warsaw; sister, Nadine (Willie) Mowrey of North Webster, Danny (Kim) Vickery of Muncie; sister-in-law, Ellen Vickery of Warsaw; 16 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren (and another great-grandchild “on the way”).
In addition to his parents, Joe was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Donald Street; sister, Phyllis Ann Mann, and brothers, Butch Vickery, Robert Vickery, and Jim Vickery.
Joe was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, the DAV, VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed NASCAR, Notre Dame football and Notre Dame Women’s basketball. Joe enjoyed camping and cruising in his golf cart; He knew no stranger and could strike a conversation (and keep it going and going and going…) with just about anyone. He cherished the time he spent with his family & friends; he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, a great dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
The Mass of Christian Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:30am Tuesday, June 4, 2024, in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1502 E. Wallen Rd. Visitation is from 10:30-11:30am Tuesday in the church. Joe will be laid to rest in St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery, with inurnment in the Oratory of St. Mary Magdelene.
