Duane and Irene built my childhood home on Evard Road. I will always remember Irene teaching my Mom how to strip and stain antique furniture. We all enjoyed “junk hunting” for treasures! Later in life I learned how much Duane and Irene helped out my Mom. They loved her and it was reciprocated. I will never forget when Irene and Mom surprised Duane with a birthday party. And was he ever surprised! Duane was ‘shocked’ that Irene pulled that off without him knowing a thing about it. Irene had Duane making potato salad, which he thought was supposed to be for my Mom, but it was actually for the party. In other words, he made his own potato salad for his own birthday party. Irene and Mom had everything decorated beautifully. They had food and entertainment for all of the guests. The party was at the Firehouse on St Joe Center Road. The party was a huge success, Irene pulled off the surprise, Duane was stunned, a true surprise and he loved every minute of it. An evening not to be forgotten. When I would come back to Indiana, I always stopped by to visit Duane, especially after Irene passed away. Last Nov (2021) Duane came to my Dad’s funeral on a snowy late fall day. I remember this man very well, I actually called him dad at one time! His daughter Diane and I were best friends and his son David and I were high school sweethearts. Diane has 3 children: Michael, Ariel and Noel. David has a daughter Michelle and a son that died in infancy. So Duane also has a grandson that preceded him in death.
Duane was a fun loving gentlemen. Respected by family, friends and co-workers.
He will truly be missed but, his memory will be cherished forever.
He is now one of God’s angels.
